2nd Stage of La Carovana dei Ghiacciai

The journey advances to another region to continue reporting new places, new glaciers and the
deglaciation processes occurring on the surfaces. The star of this second leg of “La Carovana dei Ghiacciai” is the Indren Glacier, located in the Monte Rosa massif.
Right here, where people used to go skiing in the summer, there has been a retreat in the past two years of as much as 64 mt, with 40 mt of that occurring in the last year alone.
19 AUGUST 2022
August 19 began with enthusiasm and passion for nature that David – EPHOTO photographer and technical partner of the caravan – decided to take with him, along with his backpack and equipment throughout his experience with Legambiente.
A few hours of a press conference in Aosta and then a walk around the town in the company of the President of the Aosta Valley Legambiente club, discovering the Praetorian gate perfectly embedded in the city center and its fascinating medieval parts steeped in history.
We set off again, to reach the town of Alagna.
The journey lasts about three hours, through charming little villages.
David’s attention is drawn to a woodworking workshop, “a little maze of wooden objects” as he called it, so he decides to linger a few more minutes to capture the place packed with traditional artisanal craft.
Once in Alagna, the group is complete and we enjoy a moment of downtime. Uplifted by the tune of horn player Martin Mayes, another testimonial following the campaign.
After this relaxing time, the group boarded the cable car and then set off again toward Turin.
20 AUGUST 2022
6:00 a.m.
The day starts early with the alarm clock ringing at 6:00 a.m., a quick breakfast at the café below the cable car station to replenish our energy while waiting for everyone else on the team.
After a short ride on the cable car, we arrived into a beautiful valley.
Then came the first stop, accompanied by experts from the glaciological committee with an explanation on the glacier, and a historical overview to verify the extent and speed of the deglaciation process, partially with the support of historical images attesting to the reduction in its size.
On the return route, part of the team paused at the disused cable car where there is no more ice,
just rocks, debris, lakes and puddles.
After that comes a look at the crisis of abandoned ski lifts, some 250 of them have been mapped throughout Italy by the Legambiente Report.
12:00 p.m.
The descent begins for a replenishing lunch, followed later by Martin Mayes’ lovely horn melody
played resting on a stone in the middle of the glacial lake.
21 AUGUST 2022
9:00 a.m.
The alarm clock rings early, 9:00 a.m., with a few hours of work from Vanda’s house to catch up on, alongside a bite to eat.
22 AUGUST 2022
The alarm clock also went off very early this morning.
A brief stop at Vanda’s house and then we headed to the press conference at the Glaciological Institute.
At the end of the conference, which garnered excellent media attention, we had a quick lunch break and then headed home.
And last but not least, why not wrap up the day with a rejuvenating swim in the lake?
